As the aging skin decomposes, I am progressively engaged with the textures its maturing can incarnate. I have been exploring the tones and surfaces of the aging female to inspire my flesh-like works. By examining bedsores, eczema, rashes, bruises, open wounds, and wrinkled skin, I can take these colors and markings and implement them in my paintings. These reactive colors are evident in my portraits and fleshy drapery. Combining facial features with the influential tones of infected skin exposes a true history of the form.
To further exemplify my obsession with being an aging female, I wrap my face in string. This imposes bulges and youthfulness back into my features. I create taut lumps in my cheeks, eyes, and mouth. By forcefully placing my features back to their intended origin, the images are far more grotesque than the former. Aggressive marks and textures in the facial features create an unsettling juxtaposition of form and desperate mending.
My mother’s wrapped facial features accompany these works. The wrapping of my sixty-one-year-old mother’s likeness shows a much stronger desperation in the attempt to de-age her form. This act does not reverse her older appearance. She becomes an unknown age. In many of the images, she even appears to be fleeting into space. By equally exposing the physical regression of skin and attempting to wrap and reverse the fleeting form, I am accepting the loss of youth as well as fighting it.
